News about the warming climate no longer comes as a surprise. What was once a \u201cforecast\u201d made by scientists has already become reality \u2013 something we witnessed just a few months ago during the floods in southern Poland. We are also experiencing first-hand the effects of prolonged droughts and heatwaves. So how can we respond to these changes while continuing to develop in a sustainable way? The Polish-Swiss Urban Development Programme offers an opportunity to do just that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cities the size of Grudzi\u0105dz play a much more important role in the global climate transition than might initially seem. Change begins at the local level. That is why we have started preparations to participate in the Polish-Swiss Urban Development Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the programme about?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its aim is to reduce socio-economic disparities within the European Union and improve the quality of life of residents of medium-sized cities. The fund is intended to support projects that follow the principles of sustainable development \u2013 those focused on social, environmental or economic development. In addition, the programme aims to strengthen the resilience of individual cities to the negative effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are our ideas?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After analysing the objectives set out in the city\u2019s strategic documents and taking residents\u2019 needs into account, we are developing the \u201cZr\u00f3bmy klimat\u201d project specifically with this programme in mind. It includes a wide range of measures aimed at developing blue-green infrastructure and supporting environmental education. Green spaces in our city that require attention will be revitalised and made available to residents.\n

\nOne of the ideas is to establish the \u201cGreen School\u201d Nature Education Centre on Lipowa Street, next to Tarpno Manor Park. We would like to create a facility with accommodation that can be used for education and recreation. At the same time, we want to give residents access to a renovated Manor Park. Its most valuable natural and historical features will be preserved, including the main avenue, traces of former water reservoirs and valuable vegetation, including 14 natural monuments. The park will also be equipped with small-scale recreational infrastructure. It will be accessible from the city via a recreational nature trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another idea included in the project is the redevelopment of green areas along the Trynka Canal, between Bema Street and Mickiewicza Street. We want to make more effective use of rainwater, increase biodiversity and adapt the area for various forms of recreational activity. It is already a popular place to relax, but it is also used by pupils from nearby schools and kindergartens. With children and people with disabilities in mind, we also plan to revitalise the park that once formed part of the historic Kuntersztyn estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another noteworthy idea is what we have called \u201cGreen Urban Acupuncture\u201d. Under this concept, the residents of Grudzi\u0105dz will have a say in choosing the locations and design of green squares, pocket parks, woonerfs, front gardens and vertical gardens. Residents\u2019 participation and their suggestions as to which places should be transformed and how they should be developed are important in all of these activities. So if you have an idea about what we should change, let us know!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will place particular emphasis on educational activities related to ecology, nature conservation, biodiversity and landscape. The activities will be aimed at all residents, and the venues for workshops and classes will be open and accessible to everyone. We also plan to allocate a pool of funding to educational institutions. In this way, we want to involve children, school pupils and all interested adults in activities aimed at creating a greener and more resident-friendly city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is being prepared in cooperation with partner municipalities from the Grudzi\u0105dz Functional Urban Area \u2013 the Municipality of Grudzi\u0105dz and the Municipality of Dragacz. In the Municipality of Grudzi\u0105dz, the project is expected to include the creation of eco-classrooms and the launch of a grant programme for educational institutions. In the Municipality of Dragacz, plans include the construction of a community park and funding for educational activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the introduction to this article may cause some concern, there is no reason for alarm. For several years now, our city has been investing in environmentally friendly transport, water retention and urban greening. We educate residents about separate waste collection, helping to build environmental awareness among both present and future generations. Energy and environmental issues will become increasingly important to all of us with every passing month and year. We are therefore approaching these challenges strategically, responsibly and thoughtfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project \u201cZr\u00f3bmy klimat \u2013 adaptation to climate change through the development of educational facilities and blue-green infrastructure in Grudzi\u0105dz\u201d is currently being prepared and will take part in the call for funding under the Polish-Swiss Urban Development Programme, financed through the Second Swiss Contribution to selected Member States of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We want every resident to have an opportunity to influence the preparation process and the final shape of the project. This Sunday, 15 December, a walk along the Trynka Canal will take place. Together with the Mayor, a forester and employees of the Environmental Education Centre, we will explore whether a recreational nature trail connecting the city centre with the park by Lake Tarpno is needed, discover the natural attractions along the route and discuss what should be done to make the area safe and attractive for residents.

\nWe will meet at 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Polna Street and Za Basenem Street. The walking route will be approximately 3.5 km long. The event will conclude with a bonfire at the site of the planned Nature Education Centre on Lipowa Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting will launch a series of public consultations on the project \u201cZr\u00f3bmy klimat \u2013 adaptation to climate change through the development of educational facilities and blue-green infrastructure in Grudzi\u0105dz\u201d.
