\u201cZr\u00f3bmy klimat\u201d \u2013 climate change adaptation \u2013 Grudzi\u0105dz is preparing comprehensively for the challenges posed by climate change. The city is developing an integrated adaptation strategy, ranging from the Nature Education Centre and blue-green infrastructure to modern public safety systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grudzi\u0105dz is facing two major challenges: a demographic crisis and a climate crisis. Both affect the everyday lives of residents and require comprehensive measures combining infrastructure development, education and improved public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years, the city has been experiencing a decline in population, which amounted to almost 9% between 2014 and 2023. Forecasts indicate a further decrease, which, combined with an ageing population and the outflow of young, well-educated people, is weakening the city\u2019s social capital. At the same time, the integration of foreign nationals is becoming increasingly important, as more and more of them choose Grudzi\u0105dz as a place to settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another challenge is public safety. Statistics indicate an increase in offences against life, health and property. There are degraded areas within the city that require regeneration and improved monitoring to ensure that residents feel safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mobility is another issue. The lack of a coherent network of pedestrian and cycle routes makes it difficult to move around this geographically extensive city. The existing cycling infrastructure is developing too slowly, limiting access to green areas and affecting residents\u2019 quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grudzi\u0105dz is also experiencing the effects of climate change. Heatwaves, heavy rainfall, storms and droughts are becoming increasingly frequent. These phenomena lead to local flooding, landslides and floods, while also intensifying the urban heat island effect. Water shortages in the region further increase the risk of environmental crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another significant issue is the relatively low level of environmental awareness among residents. The city lacks modern educational facilities and awareness-raising activities that could help residents adapt to changing climate conditions. At the same time, Grudzi\u0105dz is not yet making full use of its green spaces. They currently account for less than 20% of the city\u2019s area, and their distribution does not encourage effective integration with the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project responds to these challenges through the development of blue-green infrastructure, environmental education, improvements in public safety, the integration of residents and migrants, and measures aimed at increasing the city\u2019s resilience to the effects of climate change. As a result, Grudzi\u0105dz will have an opportunity to improve residents\u2019 quality of life and strengthen its attractiveness as a place to live. The \u201cZr\u00f3bmy klimat\u201d project covers six interconnected areas of activity which together form a coherent approach to adapting the city to climate change, improving residents\u2019 quality of life and strengthening public safety. Each activity responds to identified challenges and is linked to the strategic objectives of Grudzi\u0105dz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1. Development of a strategic document on migration and migrants (OT3)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The city will prepare a comprehensive document setting out principles for migration management and the integration of foreign nationals. The document will provide a basis for coordinating the activities of multiple stakeholders in order to counteract the demographic crisis and strengthen social capital. Systemic solutions will be developed to facilitate the social and economic integration of migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Strengthening public safety (OT4)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Grudzi\u0105dz will modernise its municipal surveillance system, increasing the effectiveness of preventive measures and strengthening residents\u2019 sense of security. The purchase of an electric vehicle and a charging station will enhance the city\u2019s capacity for crisis management and emergency response. These measures are particularly important for degraded areas requiring regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. Strengthening cycling transport infrastructure (OT6)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The project includes the construction of a footbridge over the Trynka Canal and the reconstruction of part of Kurpiowska Street. This will help create a coherent network of pedestrian and cycle routes, improve access to green areas and enhance residents\u2019 mobility. The development of cycling infrastructure will also contribute to reducing emissions and increasing the city\u2019s attractiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4. Stabilisation of the Trynka Canal embankments (OT7)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This activity includes the renovation and stabilisation of the canal embankments, as well as measures designed to prevent local flooding and floods. Strengthening flood protection systems will improve the safety of residents living in adjacent areas and enable the redevelopment of spaces along the canal using water-retention solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5. Nature and environmental education (OT9)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A modern educational facility \u2013 the \u201cGreen School\u201d Nature Education Centre \u2013 will be established, while the Environmental Education Centre on Nad Torem Street will be expanded. The project also includes educational activities, practical training, school competitions and the creation of a recreational and nature trail. The project partners \u2013 the Municipality of Dragacz and the Municipality of Grudzi\u0105dz \u2013 will implement additional initiatives, including a Community Park in Dragacz. These educational activities will strengthen residents\u2019 environmental awareness and promote nature-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 6. Development of blue-green infrastructure (OT9)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The city will revitalise Tarpno Manor Park and Kuntersztyn Park and redevelop areas near Primary School No. 18 and along the Trynka Canal. New public spaces featuring elements of blue-green acupuncture will be created, including at Rybny Rynek, Niepodleg\u0142o\u015bci Square, Mickiewicza Street, Kwiatowa Street and the former Jordan Garden. The project will also include a path along the Herman Drainage Ditch.\n\nThese investments will increase the amount of green space, improve water retention, reduce the urban heat island effect and enhance the appearance of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All activities have been designed to work in synergy. Their parallel implementation will strengthen Grudzi\u0105dz\u2019s resilience to the effects of climate change, improve public safety and residents\u2019 quality of life, and make the city more attractive as a place to live and enjoy leisure activities.
