Let's do it
climate!
Connecting people with nature
The city is ready
to climate change
Climate change is knocking at our door – prolonged droughts, violent floods, and other sudden weather anomalies are phenomena that will intensify each year.
Grudziądz is preparing for upcoming challenges with gusto, thanks to funds from the Swiss-Polish Programme for Urban Development.
Solutions that favour retention will be created within the city to help mitigate the negative effects of climate change. The city is also focusing on the environmental education of its residents, including the construction of a Nature Education Centre.
How to defend ourselves against climate change?
Small actions at home, in the garden or on the balcony genuinely help to retain water and support nature. Start with one of them.
Collect rainwater from the roof
From a 120 m² roof during a 20 mm rainfall, you will collect approximately 2.4 thousand litres of water from a single shower. Place a tank and use it to water your vegetables and flowers.
Create a rain garden
A good rain garden retains up to 90% of rainwater. Dig a hole 20–30 cm deep, fill it with a mixture of sand and soil, and plant irises, yarrow, coneflowers or sage.
Choose flowering plants
Flowering trees, shrubs, and perennials increase biodiversity and become food for insects and birds.
Restrict lawn mowing
Replace your lawn with a wildflower meadow if you have the opportunity. You'll retain more water and reduce watering during heatwaves.
Shade the flat with plants
Virginia creeper, hops or sweet peas on the balcony can lower the temperature in a flat by as much as 2–3 degrees in the summer.
Set up a micro-habitat
Let your balcony be a stop for pollinators. Choose lavender, sage, thyme, oregano, wild thyme, catnip, or a wildflower mix.
