Challenges

The Challenges Facing Grudziądz

Grudziądz is facing two major challenges: a demographic crisis and a climate crisis. Both affect the everyday lives of residents and require comprehensive measures combining infrastructure development, education and improved public safety.

Demographic Crisis

Between 2014 and 2023, the population of Grudziądz declined by almost 9%. Population ageing and the outflow of young people are weakening the city's social capital.

Public Safety

The number of crimes against life, health, and property is increasing. Degraded urban areas require revitalisation and improved monitoring.

Sustainable Mobility

The lack of a coherent network of pedestrian and cycling routes hampers mobility across the city and limits access to green spaces.

Climate Change Impacts

Heatwaves, heavy rainfall, storms, and droughts contribute to flooding and flash floods while intensifying the urban heat island effect.

Environmental Awareness

There is a lack of a modern educational base and awareness-raising initiatives that would help residents adapt to changing climate conditions

Green Spaces

Green spaces cover less than 20% of the city's area, and their current distribution does not support integration with the city centre or the full utilisation of their potential

Actions

SIX AREAS OF ACTION

The project comprises six interconnected areas of action that together form a coherent approach to the city's adaptation to climate change. Their parallel implementation will strengthen Grudziądz's resilience and improve the quality of life for its residents.

01
OT3

Migration Strategy

A comprehensive document setting out the principles of migration management and the integration of foreign nationals – providing a basis for coordinating measures aimed at addressing the demographic crisis.

02
OT4

Public Safety

The modernisation of the city's monitoring system, together with the purchase of an electric vehicle and charging station, will strengthen crime prevention and improve crisis management.

03
OT6

Cycling Infrastructure

The construction of a bridge over the Trynka Canal and the redevelopment of Kurpiowska Street will create a coherent network of pedestrian and cycling routes, improving sustainable mobility across the city.

04
OT7

Trynka Canal Embankments

The rehabilitation and stabilisation of the canal embankments, together with flood protection works, will reduce the risk of flooding and enable the area to be developed using water retention solutions.

05
OT9

Environmental Education

The project includes the development of the Green School Nature Education Centre, the expansion of the Environmental Education Centre (CEE) on Nad Torem Street, the creation of a nature and recreation trail, and the establishment of the Community Park in Dragacz.

06
OT9

Blue-Green Infrastructure

The revitalisation of the Podworskie Tarpno and Kuntersztyn parks, together with the introduction of blue-green infrastructure in public squares and along city streets, will increase urban greenery and enhance water retention.
