A birdwatching walk, making seed bombs, building birdhouses and hand-painting bags – residents actively took part in a family picnic held to mark the launch of the “Zróbmy Klimat” project in Tarpno Manor Park.
“Grudziądz is one of 19 cities to join the project financed by Swiss Funds. This is a major success, as more than 100 Polish cities took part in the competition,” said Mayor Maciej Glamowski. As he emphasised, the project is unique because it combines many different aspects. In addition to adapting the city to climate change, it is also intended to strengthen residents’ sense of security and identify the needs of migrants.
The event was also attended by Tomasz Szymański, Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration, as well as representatives of the Embassy of Switzerland – Katarzyna Templin-Ukleja and Monika Ciemięga, National Programme Officer at the Polish-Swiss Cooperation Programme Office. The Association of Polish Cities was represented by Tomasz Potkański and Anna Żabińska-Pioterek, who advise cities participating in the project and support its implementation. The opening event was also attended by programme partners Dorota Krezymon, Mayor of the Municipality of Dragacz, and Iwona Ślusarska, representing the rural municipality of Grudziądz. Members of the Grudziądz City Council were also present.
As a reminder, the project will include a number of interconnected investments whose main objective is to strengthen the city’s resilience to the effects of climate change. In addition to infrastructure investments, educational activities have also been planned to raise residents’ awareness.
- We will establish the “Green School” Nature Education Centre on Lipowa Street, next to Tarpno Manor Park. The facility will include accommodation and will be used for educational and recreational purposes. Access to the centre will be improved through the renovation of a section of Kurpiowska Street.
- Residents will gain access to a renovated Manor Park, while its most valuable natural and historical features will be preserved, including the main avenue, traces of former water reservoirs and valuable vegetation, including 14 natural monuments. The park will also be equipped with small-scale recreational infrastructure.
- Residents will be able to reach the park via a nature-themed recreational path leading from the city. A footbridge over the Trynka Canal will also be built, connecting the Manor Park with the Nature Education Centre.
- We will redevelop green areas along the Trynka Canal, between Bema Street and PCK Street, as well as the area near Primary School No. 13, where a recreational space dedicated to people with disabilities will be created. The entire area will be designed to make effective use of rainwater, increase biodiversity and adapt the space for various forms of recreational activity.
- We will revitalise Kuntersztyn Park with residents and school pupils in mind. A vegetable garden and an educational trail running alongside natural monuments will be created.
- As part of the “Blue-Green Acupuncture” initiative, we will introduce more greenery in locations including Niepodległości Square, Mickiewicza Street, Kwiatowa Street, the former Jordan Garden on Kosynierów Gdyńskich Street and the path along the Herman Drainage Ditch.
- We will renovate the Environmental Education Centre on Nad Torem Street and create an outdoor educational space.
- We will reinforce a section of the Trynka Canal embankments.
- We will organise a range of educational activities for residents focusing on water retention, biodiversity and environmental issues in order to raise awareness of the effects of climate change.
- We will redevelop the area around Primary School No. 18, together with part of the 900th Anniversary Park.
- We will expand the city monitoring system in the city centre.
- We will prepare a strategic document addressing migration in our city.
- A dedicated programme for schools will be established, providing funding for activities related to greenery and water retention.
- The Municipality of Dragacz will build a community park and organise educational activities.
- The Municipality of Grudziądz will create four eco-classrooms in primary schools and carry out educational projects.
